I've been aware of his music for a lot of years, having heard bits and pieces of it in various TV and radio programs. Anyone familiar with the BBC radiodrama of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy may have heard snippets of Jarre's Oxygene allbum during the narration sections. But I really started getting interested in his music after a Creative Writing teacher in High School had us listen to Oxygene, the entire album mind you, in one of his classes and then write whatever came to mind. Then recently I started collecting his albums (I have eight now), and I'm curious if there are any other Jarre fans on the Zone.
I have one pretty good album by a jazz pianist but I'm not sure it's the same guy.
Oh I'm a big Jarre fan myself, I think he's a genius, and I too have quite a few albums by him.
If I may, I'd like to recommend that you take a listen to the music of Mike Oldfield. Though He's not much into electronica as Jarre, he himself is a genius, and, one album that comes to mind immediately, is Songs from Distant Earth.
Thanks for the Oldfield recommendation! I used to have his scores for "The Exorcist" and "The Killing Fields". Re: Jarre, I have "Oxyjean", "Equinox", and "Magnetic Fields"; may get more.
Gunslinger, Jean-Michel Jarre isn't a jazz musician. He's a French composer of electronic music. I think where you got confused is that some versions of Eloquence pronounce his name differently. It's actually pronounced much like the word Jar. As for the albums of his I own, I have Oxygene, Oxygene 7-13, Oxygene: Live in your Living Room, Equinoxe, Magnetic Fields, Rendez-vous, Revolutions and Chronologie. It's thanks to Jarre that I've become interested in trying to compose electronic music myself. It's why I've been trying to learn about synthesizers that a blind person might be able to use.
Another artist I sort of like is Vangelis, although I'm nowhere near as familiar with his music as I am with Jarre's. And I've heard some of Mike Oldfield, namely Tubular Bells.
Oh wow, Vangelis did some awesome stuff too, really worth looking into.
He did the soundtrack to Charriots of Fire did he not? Or at least parts of it. I'm very picky about what electronica I listen to. I like the ambient, atmospheric kind of stuff. That's why I like Jarre so much. I remember in Creative Writing when we were supposed to listen to Oxygene and then write whatever came to hand, some fairly abstract pieces emerged from that particular class. Even Equinoxe is perfect for something like that. And it'll definitely shape your dreams if you should happen to fall asleep while listening to it.
